Topio Publications, the life's
work of the photographer Dimitris Talianis, was founded
in 1987. Even in the company's first album, Orientations
to the Aegean (to poems by Odysseas Elytis), the founder's
inclination and philosophy were clear: his purpose was to
depict the soul of Greece, the beauty and poetry of its
landscape, and to stay clear of the consumer or tourist
'angle'.
Topio Publications, whose general
editor since 1995 has been Athena Dountsi, specialises exclusively
in the publication of illustrated books (albums of photographs,
art books). During all its years in the publishing world,
it has consistently maintained the highest standards in
every respect: photography, the compilation and editing
of the texts, translation, artistic design, colour separations,
printing and binding.
In order to ensure that our
books are easily available in Greece and other countries,
we have set up an exemplary system of sales support and
promotion. Leaflets provide information about all our publications.
Events connected with Topio books have been hosted by agencies
recognised for their cultural and national importance, including
the National and Historical Museum, the Byzantine Museum,
the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Athens Concert Hall, the
I. Vorres Museum of Contemporary Art, the Archaeological
Association, Athens College, the Institut Fran¨ais, and
a number of well-known Athens art galleries.
Among the institutions abroad
which have held presentations of Topio Publication books,
audio-visual events and other visual material are Harvard
University (George Seferis Chair), the University of Western
Australia at Perth, the Hellenic Institute in Boston, the
University of Geneva, and the Orthodox Cathedral Church
of the Holy Trinity in New York.
Our quest for the most authoritative
collaborators on each subject means that the list of those
with whom our Publications have so far had the good fortune
to be associated is a long one: from Odysseas Elytis to
Panos Theodoridis, Vasos Karayiorgis, Nikos Karapidakis,
Dimitris Tsoungarakis, Kostas Serezis, Yannis Hatzifotis,
Yannis Rouskas, Emanouil Lignos and many other eminent experts
in prose texts.
Topio Publications have had
the honour to work with famous artists such as the painter
Paris Prekas and the set designer Vasilis Fotopoulos.
It would be an omission not
to list among our associates the agencies and institutions
which have entrusted us with publishing commissions: the
Ministry of the Aegean, the Holy Metropolitan Bishopric
of Trikke and Stagoi, the Municipalities of Thessaloniki,
Corfu, Mytilene, and Kalloni (Lesvos), the Athens War Museum,
the General State Archives, the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic
Art, the Alexandros Onassis Foundation, the Santorini Folklore
Museum, the Museum of the Petrified Forest (Lesvos), the
E.A. Lignos Folklore Museum of Santorini and many others.
